Being a woman in today's society is rough! Should I have a career? Should I stay home and take care of my children? What should I wear? Do I look too sexy? Do I look too frumpy? Am I over weight?Am I too thin? It is all TOO MUCH! All of these questions have crossed a woman's mind. If you say they haven't, I don't believe you. Nope. STOPLYIN! Anywhozer, women don't just wake up one morning and develop insucurrecties. It's a learned behavior and the #1 teacher is the media. Media tries to tell women AND men for that matter, how to think, eat, drink, sleep, even poop! Maybe I took it too far but the media crossed the line a long time ago! Miss Representation is trying to put perspective on the media's portrayal of women.
Miss Representation website:
The film Miss Representation exposes how American youth are being sold the concept that women and girls’ value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality. It’s time to break that cycle of mistruths.
In response we created MissRepresentation.org, a call-to-action campaign that seeks to empower women and girls to challenge limiting labels in order to realize their potential.
We are uniting individuals around a common, meaningful goal to spark millions of small actions that ultimately lead to a cross-generational movement to eradicate gender stereotypes and create lasting cultural and sociological change.
This is awesome! Another thing that makes Miss Representation so amazing is that this organization has created curriculum to teach in schools! Yes! Educators can purchase this curriculum and teach their students about distorted images of women in the media. If children are educated about the media, then hopefully they won't be effected by the messages they're bombarded with on a daily basis. They will understand that the media's job is to make money. Don't get caught up in the hype. If they know better, they will do better!
Watch the trailer for the movie below.
Miss Representation premieres tomorrow, Thursday, October 20th at 9pm ET. Please watch it ya'll. Get your children, nieces, nephews, mentees, whoever in front of the television! Make them watch something that will actually benefit them.
Miss Representation also encourages people to have house parties to view the movie tomorrow. I'm trying to organize mine as I type. I know it's last minute but it isn't too late! To get more information about this movement go to their website!
Sexy or Sexism?
